The people aren't real. May 4, 2005 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
Sounds like somebody from Arizona trying to write with a Southern accent. They practically give you a map to people's houses but then starts the fiction. The characters have no talent, brains, music, soul. They are so flat. Except that a guy who couldn't even spell orchid is an orchid expert in this fiction. The sweetest lady (he tells us exactly where her restaurant is) is a scary monster-wife in this book. I live in the town he wrote about, so that's how I know. Why is everyone so much uglier and more shallow than in real life? I was disappointed. Why didn't he just place the story somewhere else instead of pinpointing real places and people and then writing untrue things about them? Our town has a lot of smart and inspired people living fascinating lives but they weren't in this book, even though their houses were. A lot of hard work went into this book and I feel bad about giving a bad review. The policeman tried to be honest about his own feelings, which is good, but other's feelings were not considered.
