5 out of 5 stars Giant Chicken Wins Over Granddaughter   May 5, 2008
My granddaughter just loves this book. She wanted to finish the book the first night but Mom said bedtime ruled. Have reread the book 4 times and she still wants more. I highly recomend this book for great bonding time.

5 out of 5 stars A classic, funny tale   November 5, 2007
Daniel Pinkwater's THE HOBOKEN CHICKEN EMERGENCY tells of Arthur, who sets out to bring home the family's Thanksgiving turkey and instead returns with Henriette - a 266-pound chicken with an attitude. New illustrations by Pultizer Price winner Tony Auth enhances a new edition of a classic, funny tale perfect for libraries seeking to replace aging classics.

4 out of 5 stars Who knew chickens could be so interesting?   August 14, 2007

I wasn't sure about the book when it was foisted upon me by one of the children's librarians. Chickens . . . they don't seem that interesting. This is not the case for 266 pound chickens like Henrietta.

Arthur brings Henrietta home on Thanksgiving having failed to procure a turkey (or duck, or normal sized chicken) for his family's holiday dinner. But, upon meeting Henrietta, the family decides she might be more pet than poultry. Chaos ensues, however, when Henrietta gets loose.

It's a cute story and a quick read. The characters created by Daniel Pinkwater (and illustrated by his wife Jill) are memorable and lots of fun. I also really liked the message of the story, which overtly is that "Chickens need love too" but is also just a call for tolerance-something that can never be stated enough. Pinkwater originally wrote this book in the 1970s and I'm pretty confident it will continue to be a favorite for years to come.

3 out of 5 stars cute book   July 26, 2007
THis is actually one where I liked the movie better (Wonderworks did one maybe 20 years ago now, and it might just be nostalgia that makes me love that).
Pinkwater is genius, and this is a good book-- it's just not the GREAT book I was hoping for.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, fast read!   August 26, 2006

When Arther Bobowicz is asked to bring home the Thanksgiving turkey,he is horrified to discover the shops are empty. But when he visits the apartment of an eccentric scientist,he finds himself bringing home a 266 pound chicken instead. He insists to his parents he should be able to keep the chicken and eventually, his begging succeeds. He has great fun teaching his chicken new tricks,(such as going down slides, playing on swingsets etc.)but his 266 pound chicken escapes. Mayhem ensues.

This book is a fun, fast read for children of all ages to enjoy. While it can be read in one sitting,it should be read at least twice, in order to get all the jokes.
