5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Introduction to Carving Folk Art   March 5, 2006
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

I have purchased many carving books that deal with caricature and folk art, and this one by Shawn Cipa has become my all-time favorite. Shawn has a background in art, and this shows in his approach. Rather than taking the reader through a rigid set of guidelines to produce a carving that is *exactly* like the one he has done, he instead encourages individual creativity. The book includes some pages that show possible variations on his patterns to get the reader in a creative frame of mind.

As for the projects, they range from fairly simple to rather complex, so you can "grow" with this book as your carving skills advance. The carvings are very "stylized," and "whimsical." His Santas are particulary enjoyable to do.

Photographs are very clear, and it is a joy to see a book with captions that do MORE than say things like "now carve the nose."
Shawn EXPLAINS the steps in doing the nose (and other features) with a great combination of detailed photographs and precise instructions (including recommendations of what tool to use for a specific step).

Finally, the patterns in this book are incredibly accurate, and allow you to exactly reproduce the carving (if that's what you really want to do). I have carved for several years and I can say with all candor that this is one of the very best instructional books that I have encountered. I also recommend Shawn's "Carving Fantasy and Legend Figures" for more advanced and challenging projects.
