A 128 page book on how to play a human character in D20. Took me a second too. :) But then I did something really strange, I picked it up and flipped through it. At first I was struck with the thought that this had to be a complete waste of time on both the writer's and reader's time. Why would someone do this?!? Then you begin to read it, then the question changes to Why wasn't this done sooner?!?

I was actually compelled to buy the thing for full list price from the store ($23.50ish with tax for a soft cover). I began talking with the clerk about it. He said he had exactly the same response I did, first What the hell? then (as he put it) It's kinda like missing the forest for the trees. Humans are always there, people just took playing them for granted since humans play the game. :)

After reading through the book the last couple of days I have come to admit that this is probably the second book every player should buy after they get a copy of the Player's Handbook. While I am compelled to state that very little in this book is actually human required (classes, feats, and concepts could all be converted to other races if the players and DM wanted) but at the least the book makes the player and DM think about the fact that humans should not be viewed as the boring race to play. :)

There is actually some funny and relevant sections of the book that detail the mentality of humans due to their short lifespan, how to incorporate heritage and lineage since other players can outlive them, and a higher fertility rate and how to deal with pregnant players or NPC.

Of course I am sure you are still trying to wrap your brain around why this book exists. But trust me you should look into buying or at least reading it. It is quite good. :)
