My FAVORITE cookbook series August 14, 2008 I have loved the CULINARIA series from the very first volume that I was given as a gift. If you are interested in lerning the history and culture of Italy by learning about the food eaten there, this is the book for you.
The book is divided into chapters by geographic regions. Each region is described by the physical features that make it unique, the foods and ingredients that are special to it, and recipes are given for the dishes that define it. There are abundant sidebars about significant topics either historical, political or cultural in the region that have shaped the food or people.
Then there is the photography. Beautiful photographs of the landscape, detailed photographic charts of ingredients, appetizingly displayed prepared dishes, step-by-step series showing ingredients being made, and people lovingly portrayed going about their daily lives.
This book is BIG, no bedtime reading with this one, you won't be able to hold it up! If you love cookbooks for the way they tell the story of a country, the CULINARIA Italy is not to be missed.
Designed to give you an appreciation of all things relating to the Italian kitchen January 29, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
As it says in the introduction, "Culinaria Italy" is "where the art of cooking and the art of living meet."
This is a fairly comprehensive, one volume adventure which explores the culture of the 19 regions of Italy. In the 750 miles from the Alpine mountains to the toe of the boot, the geography and history have shaped the people and the food. Available ingredients and the proximity of central Europe make cuisine in the northern part of Italy quite different from the Mediterranean influences in Sicily.
"Culinaria Italy" contains everything from maps to copies of 400 year old still life paintings of food from the Old Masters, in addition to some mouth watering recipes. For example, one section describes the region's wine making history and includes a lavish description of the Murano glassworks. So, you'll have a great cultural appreciation when you sip your wine from a Murano goblet.
The section on the Compania Region includes a beautiful four page layout about tomatoes. Pictures, descriptions, discussion of commercially available tomato products, instructions on how to can your own tomatoes, and several recipes that feature the tomato. There are similar sections of the book that give you plenty of detail on Italian olive oil, herbs, cheeses, wines, pastas, and more.
This is a beautiful book with gorgeous photographys; evocative of a culture and a way of life. It's so much more than a cookbook!
Highly recommended!!
Great Book not just about food January 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great book not just about food. There is a bit of history, culture, geography and food!!!
Food & Travel in one September 28, 2007 Italian food by region. Lots of photos & articles about regional specialties in addition to recipes. I like looking at these books for inspiration, ideas and information about ethnic dishes.
This book has it all! May 23, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I don't remember ever writing a book review for Amazon but I couldn't resist this opportunity. "Culinaria Italy" is a FANTASTIC, exciting book. Exciting because as soon as you open the 1st page you are immersed in all that is wonderful about Italy; the scenery, the villages, the people and, of course, the food. As a photographer who has taken literally 1000s of photos of Italy - we go at least once a year - we are leaving again tomorrow (May 24th) I am a harsh critic of photos...especially photos of places I have photographed. The photos in this book are outstanding in their capture of Italian life - wonderful human interest images of people as well as food and vistas. The historical text on each area is concise and informative. The recipes taken from each area of Italy seem within reach - not at all difficult to manage - and, they ALL look delicious. My only regret is that the book is large and heavy and hard to read in bed!!
