1 out of 5 stars Not for Kids   June 26, 2008
My daughter was assigned The Lovely Bones for tenth grade reading. I really feel that the graphic man-child rape that goes on for several pages and perhaps the later sex scene are not for 15 year olds. Unless your child is used to this sort of thing from movies or reading, I would ask that they be allowed to read another book although the way they are picking these summer reading list books these days it will probably be just as edgy or as I see it - offensive. Well anyhow, read it for yourself, it's OK for more mature readers and if you find it on your youngsters required summer reading list, let the school know if you find it too sick or disturbing.

1 out of 5 stars Bad to the bone   May 26, 2008
This book is just a classic case of literati hype; it is poorly written, the ending is right out of bad cinema 101, and the people /circumstances in the book are just implausible. Frankly, I have no idea why any publisher would bankroll this rag. Save your money.

3 out of 5 stars Heaven and Loss   April 26, 2008
A vivacious, intelligent 14 year old girl is raped and murdered on her way home from school by a creepy neighbor. She dies and goes to heaven and recounts the tale from there. She watches her family struggling and trying to deal with the tragedy from the police investigation that immediately follows up until years afterwards when her siblings are grown up and their parents age. I feel that it started out great though rather harshly and boldly and I was not surprised to hear the author herself was a victim of rape. No-one else could have written a rape scene so vividly and painfully, in other words so well. The premise for heaven was interesting and different than anything else I have ever encountered but however, when the story shifts from the investigation and the narrator's struggle to adjust to life in heaven and the struggle on earth for those left behind and moves to a biography of her family, the book loses a lot of flavor and cohesion. However, all in all, it's a worthwhile read.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Surprise   January 8, 2008
I picked up this book in the summer for about 5 bucks on the clearance shelf at Waldenbooks. I had heard of it before.

Any aspiring author should read this book. It is beautifully crafted. The plot is complex. It is a page-turner that you can easily stay up all night to read. The best part of the book is how the author lets you know lots of follow-up details about the secondary characters. You have a few questions at the end, but most of them are answered.

4 out of 5 stars The Lovely Bones   November 16, 2007
The Lovely Bones by: Alice Sebold, is about a fourteen year old girl named Susie Salmon. Susie gets murdered by a teacher named Goerge Harvey. When she dies she goes into her own version of heaven. While she is there she realizes how her death effected many people. Some of my favorite parts in this book is when Susie's father notices her presence. Another one of my favorite parts is when everyone that Susie knew (and more) made a bonfire to remember her. Those parts were very heart warming.I would recomend this book to anyone over the age of 11. Also if you are someone who doesn't like books that are graphically described then i would not recomend this book to you. If you like touching stories then this is a great book. It also may teach you something about understanding families who have lost a loved one.
