5 out of 5 stars Why 5? Read On....   November 8, 2006
I enjoyed this movie very much. Not only did it deliver in the entertainment department, it had heart. By this, I mean that this Godzilla, like the original "Gojira" was a sympathetic character - a victem of humankind's thoughtless actions (nuclear experiments).
The original Gojira monster was based on what they thought dinosaurs looked like in the '50s, that is to say, "Godzilla-like". Now, paleontologists imagine dinosaurs as lithe, fast, agile, smart, and advanced. So the new Godzilla has those traits as well. I found it a nice comparison of dinosaur-to-movie phenomena. Sure, there are weak points to this movie, and some very strong ones. Some of my favorite things about the movie are: empathy towards animals despite what they do to us, a nice jab at film critics in the two Siskel/Ebertine characters, is the military force that adept at anything besides killing other humans, and finaly, what is the affect of human arrogance/ignorance (nuclear energy?), on the planet?
Just my thoughts.

I first watched this movie in theaters when it came out and I absolutely loved it. I guess I'm different in that I never went into it with the intention or idea of comparing it to the original Godzilla. I knew it was a reinterpretation and I thought it was awesome. My 16 yr old son and I watched it recently on one of the cable movie channels and he was even more entertained by it than I, if that's possible. If you look at this film that way instead of trying to compare it to the original you will see an exciting, action packed film that really is awe inspiring and terrifying. Yes, it does have its campy, funny moments... they just have nothing to do with the monster. I honestly don't understand why people didn't enjoy this film. My own sister, who's just as big a Godzilla fan as I, didn't enjoy it. "He's not the original Godzilla!!" No, he's not. He's bigger, faster, meaner... better. I'm gonna end up buying it.

Get real, this is a very entertaining movie that was very well done with special effects and character developement.Sure I loved the old Godzilla movies too, but face it they are weak in effects and character.Enjoy the oldies but don't get so caught up in them that you can't accept change. If they tried to keep Godzilla the same as the past films he would be the laughing stock of hollywood.Appreciate the fact that somebody loved the old monster enough to update him or her, to keep the classic monster going.

I have no problem with CGI instead of a guy in a rubber suit. That being said, this is NOT Godzilla. Godzilla looks like Godzilla. The filmakers could have made a CGI version that still looked the real thing. You can't just create a totally new monster and name it Godzilla and expect people to accept it. Well, on the other hand, I guess you can, but the real fans will not accept it. Also, Godzilla is a male. And he breathes atomic breath. And he attacks Tokyo, not NYC. This film is Godzilla in name only. What the filmakers did is the equivalent to making a James Bond film, casting Angelina Jolie in the title role (Jamie Bond), and changing her from British to an American.

Oops. I've said to much. I hope I don't give a producer out there any stupid ideas. Hollywood is insane.

This is absolutely the best Godzilla of them all - looks great in CGI! The 5.1 sound is terrific, along with the widescreen presentation, but I would have preferred anamorphic transfer. Commentary is excellent, explaining all the special effects of the movie - not like other commentaries which seem to wander in all directions. This one is really done like it should be. I love the giant "eye" on the DVD cover and as the focus of the movie. Great Stuff!
