I simply don't get it... Why on earth everyone hates this movie so much? Is it because it's like a million times better than all those cheesy old movies? With all the lights and things that asians love? If you like Jiban, Ultraman, Dragon Ball and all of that asian crap then go and get the old Godzilla movies. If you are in for a good popcorn flick with very good special FX and a funny ALA ID4 tone, then this is your movie. I for one loved it and I keep watching it from time to time even after all these years. I'm just waiting for it to make it's way to BluRay so I can enjoy it even more.
I certainly hope they are planning to do a sequel sometime in the future although its not likely.
BTW. I thought CLOVERFIELD was its sequel. I was wrong, and that movie did SUCKED.

Wow! This movie just blew me away! This movie is number two on my all time favorite movie list. People who say this movie is not any good need to have their brains examined for holes.

I just watched Cloverfield the other day, then went and rented this 'Godzilla' movie which I hadn't watched in years to compare. This was supposed to be a remake/re-doing of an international icon, and this is what they came up with? Cloverfield is what Godzilla SHOULD have been!
The original Godzilla in the 50's was a serious film, the people of Japan lived in fear. Cloverfield established this terror. This 'Godzilla' was a joke. There was a huge monster running around New York City and the people in the movie acted as if it were business as usual. One scene, for example, the big lizard had just destroyed 3 Apache helicopters. Next scene, Matthew Broderick is buying coffee and pregnancy tests at drug store. The store is still open, there is still power, what's going on here?
And this Godzilla is a mutated IGUANA. Fine, thats ok, but iguanas do not eat fish... they are mostly vegetarian. That whole scene where they lured the monster to this huge hill of fish was ridiculous. And Matthew Broderick's character called it an amphibian, which iguana's aren't.
There are so many bad things about this movie, the acting, the whole plot in general, what is wrong with Hollywood when they allow a so called blockbuster movie like this to be made? The teaser trailers were good, not showing the monster. The monster itself was not a disappointment, just how the movie developed and how the whole situation wasn't taken seriously by characters of this movie. Bad movie.
Good until the 90 minute mark... January 23, 2008
Regardless of what you might have heard, 1998's Godzilla is a pretty decent remake of the original.
I had seen the movie in its' original release and remembered having a negative opinion, but couldn't remember the details. I recently found the DVD on the cheap and decided to give it a second chance.
Watching the giant iguana Godzilla tear through rainy New York was a lot of fun. The CGI didn't bother me and Godzilla's new look wasn't bad. (Not as good as the Japanese one though!) I started to wonder why this movie didn't do better and if maybe I was too critical. Then about 90 minutes in, Dean and Roland lose track of the story (they are listed as contributors to the screen play, so I feel it's fair to blame them).
The movie suddenly stops focusing on Godzilla and switches to Madison Square Garden where a bunch of mini-Zillas hatch and chase the cast around. This drags on for a half an hour. Hank Azaria's part in the movie suddenly becomes too big and you realize that Steven Spielberg has directed a MUCH better version of this same set-up in Jurassic Park. This movie starts to become waterlogged.
Once the main characters escape and Godzilla starts running around again, the movie picks up, but at that point my fiance and I were already yawning.
If you like the idea of big monsters stomping cities, I'd still recommend this one.

An interesting thing happens throughout this movie. The beginning is wonderful. It sets the tone early with the mystery and at the same time, the massive scale of what is yet to come. The cast is forgettable from the start, but all things considering, their acting and roles could be worse. When the action begins and Godzilla is unleashed on NYC, it never lets up till the very end of the film. That is a good thing in one manner of speaking, for people who crave non-stop action accompanyied by outstanding effects. But I couldn't help but notice while the action increased, the script, story, and characters all got lazy, and even cheesy and corny. Finally, there's no help there to save this movie, so it ends up being popcon entertainment.
The creators did a god job of creating settings that make Godzilla feel like an actual monster. He definetly looks and feels more massive than the older Godzilla movies. The creators also wanted to set this Godzilla apart from the classic in terms of looks. The result was good for the most part, but the head design didn't work too well for me. It was too long and flat. The special effects both from the creature and the surrounding environment (fighter jets, crashes, explosions etc.) were well done, though hinting at a bit of out-dated when watched today, about 10 years later.
A big chunk of this movie takes place in Madison Square Garden. Just when you think the film might be over (which you know its not anyways cause this is only at 80 minutes into it), its like a new film begins - Jurassic Park: Raptor Takeover. Dozens, maybe hundred of eggs fill the interior of the arena, and as luck would have it, all hatch at the same time while our characters are inside. This begins the never-ending segments of running from these babies who look and almost act like Raptors. The scenes are fun, scary and suspenseful...but it just goes and on and on til eventually enough is enough. When the problem s finally solved, the film is still far from over. Like I said, action that never lets up.
Non-stop mindless entertainment is what this is about. Though they try to create a unique Godzilla film to set apart from the rest, it works only to a slight degree. The story, script, and cast add very little too (though Jean Reno was the highlight to see, unfortunately he still didn't fit this film cause the lack of script didn't bring him to his potential.)
