1 out of 5 stars Godzilla vs Mecha Devlin and Emmerich   May 15, 2007

This movie should only be viewed as a coaster for your beer to rest on while you watch a REAL Godzilla movie...P.S. I rated this loser of a flick 1 star because there wasn't an option for the this-is-the-worst-suck-movie-of-all-time rating

2 out of 5 stars 2.5; it's barely mind-numbing fun   May 13, 2007

For a long time, I never got the hate that was put on the "re-imagining" of Japan's monster mascot: Godzilla. Sure the movie at times was slow and casting choices were questionable but it had a kind of dumb fun aspect to it, like you couldn't get over how ridiculous it felt. Revisiting the film recently however finally made me realize whatever one saw right when it first came out: this is a dumb movie period with only fleeting amounts of good filmmaking attached to it. I like Independence Day and Stargate and even enjoyed the Day After Tomorrow but this...I don't know what this is.

Born out of nuclear testing in the French Polynesian islands, a lizard grown to monstrous size is making its way to New York. On hand to help out the military is Nick Tatapoulos, a scientist specializing in nuclear affected organisms, namely that of earthworms. His former girlfriend, Audrey, is a fledging-yet-struggling news reporter with friends "Animal" and Lucy. Arriving in New York is Gojira, a massive lizard who gets named Godzilla by the media and Nick, Audrey and Animal have to escape New York while evading the massive beast.

This is one of those cast lists where it's hard to enjoy the film because they picked odd choices for their actors. While Jean Reno can make anything cool, when you think action hero you don't necessarily think Matthew Broderick. I like him in smaller movies like Election but here he seems kinda...wimpy. A nice touch though is having 3 Simpsons actors, Azaria, Harry Shearer and Nancy Cartwright appear with the former 2 getting the more better outings (Cartwright is strictly a cameo). As for the lizard himself, I don't actually mind his design but turning him into basically an animal rather than this vicious stomp-everything tank was kind of a mistake. They try to create sympathy at the ending but it comes across like a bad idea that never changed all the way through.

Effect-wise it seems kind of possible. Like him or not, Emmerich movies tend to be the most coolest visually with many people going simply because there's a grandiose aspect to them. Godzilla is kind of hit-and-miss with some shots being well animated and seamless while others just look way too obvious and green-screened. The title character is similar with many shots looking really great while others have that kind of unfinished look at times. It's better than a guy in a suit of course but maybe someone with a more critical eye like Spielberg or Cameron would've done this best.

The film itself just feels sluggish. When he actually makes his initial appearance in Manhattan, it's as exciting as anything from Independence Day but then at a certain point something weird happens: he disappears for a good chunk of the movie. This happened in a way with ID4 where the aliens attacking, the best part of the movie became a big talky movie until the finale. This film isn't quite as uneven but the scenes don't really have the energy needed it's like it feels neutered. At times it's great like when he makes havoc on New York but other times it just doesn't quite cut it.

I liked ID4 and Stargate but this is quite the blemish. It's hard to even recommend anything about it without going "well no that wasn't good either". Rent at your own risk.

1 out of 5 stars I HATE ThiS MOVIE!   April 28, 2007

I am a big G-fan, and not all his movies are cheesy like stupid Americans claim. In fact. They now use great CGI effects, especially in Films like GMK and Godzilla vs.Destroyah. The acting is not good. The characters are cardboard cutouts, could be easily copied and pasted into any random "Sci-fi channel Un-original Movie"

Well I enjoyed this film, it was a fun night out, when I firsts aw it theatrically and to this day I still pop it in for good entertainment. Is it the old Godzilla, no not by far. I love old Godzilla I really do, but I'm no crazed fanatic. I have all of the movies featuring Godzilla, and they are all fun, some not so fun like SOn of Godzilla-really bad film. BUt they all have they're charm. I know that Godzilla fans hate the remake or revision. But lets be realistic, if your going to remake Godzilla go all out and make it different. The special effects were great, still are as well as they hold up even today. While I consider Gojira a full blown classic, I'm glad they went somewhere different with it here in the remake. There are some good laughs and cool action scenes. The overall story is weak but not bad, and the new look for Godzilla and lets be realistic fits, while I wanted a full blown fire breathing monster, at least we got a giant monster. I wish this would get a sequel. But I know most people will hate me for giving this a good review but yknow so what. A man in a rubber suit doesn't cut it anymore people, I'm sorry. Thats probably why I don't like any of the modern films that came after this remake. They are just sad movies.

cool movie if you're a scalie, I personaly think godzilla's hawt in this movie, lots of action, they ended it as if they were planning a sequal, unless the cartoon series was the sequal. I certainly hope the bring this version of the big G back for another run.
