5 out of 5 stars Powerful Acting, Phenomenal True Story!   April 27, 1999
After movies like TOP GUN and DAYS OF THUNDER, Tom Cruise really proved himself as a serious actor in this powerful role. I can't imagine anyone else playing it better. Ron Kovic's brilliant autobiographical portrait is brought to life on the screen by acclaimed director Oliver Stone. While the Vietnam War is integral to the plot, the movie really illustrates what happened to our country during the Sixties, shown through the eyes of a paralyzed Vietnam veteran. His touching struggle to make peace with God, himself, his family, and his country are powerfully portrayed. While I disagree with some of the politics of the movie, I can not deny its excellence or its effect on how I view the Vietnam War. Should be required viewing by every high schooler. A masterpiece!

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest films around......   March 2, 1999

From the opening scene of a Fourth of July parade all the way to the end, it really shows what happened before and after the war. One of the rare Vietnam war films that is really worth watching. Although my father was not actually in combat, but in another part of the army, his friends were. From all his stories to this film in particular, I can see how these veterns came back to a country that ultimatly turned against them and their struggles to just keep going.

5 out of 5 stars POWERFUL!!!   February 5, 1998
This movie is extremely powerful and inspiring, as well as educational. It changes my view toward wars and Vietnam War veterans, and it somehow makes me promise to myself that I will not waste my life. Playing this role is obviously a risk for Tom Cruise, but his performance is not only good; it's stunning! The only thing imperfect about the movie is it is a bit too heavy-handed and elaborated, I think. END
