The Warden's Game February 22, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have never been to Alaska but I now truly know what it's like. John Floyd's description of the weather, landscape and people is matched only by his ability to tell a story. This is one exciting story. I highly recommend it. Cal Adams, Madison, Ms.
Most people would say this is a 5-star story! January 15, 2007 Most people would say that this is a 5-star story, in fact, that's what I would say, except that all of John M. Floyd's work tends to be 5-star material, so I'm rating this story 4 1/2 stars. That's just so you can tell which stories by Floyd are really wonderful (like this one) and which ones are truly brilliant (like "The Winslow Tunnel"). Now, on with the review....
This story is kind of an Alaskan cowboy adventure. There's the tavern which houses what people say is the only Brunsiwck pool table north of Anchorage. Then there's Lars Hansen, just sitting there minding his own business, contemplating heading home for the day. That's when Lars starts trying to figure out what a stranger by the name of Abe Callendar is up to exactly. The stranger says he's from a mining camp upriver, near Fort Douglas. While Lars is wrapping his brain around that, the Grummond brothers come in. Trouble just doesn't seem to want to stay away from the Side Pocket Tavern. Apparently, Ward Grummond -- his brothers call him 'The Warden' -- has some unfinished business with Shorty Davenport. Unable to find Shorty, The Warden "volunteers" Colson to play him in a high stakes game of pool, where Colson is expected to lose. The night gets more and more tense as all of the pieces of this story pile on high. I'll wager that you'll be glad you plunked down 49 cents to read this story! I know I'm happy that I did. :)
A priceless risk October 16, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
"Lars Hansen smelled trouble." A sharp beginning tossed me instantly into this wintry tale, and I was thrilled by my choice. I have been meaning a while now to read John M. Floyd; this Amazon Short was as fine a start as any. The Grummonds are more than a share of trouble. Howling wind, sled dogs growling --- an invisible guardian stirs the night air. A 220-pounder cowboy, a newcomer at the Side Pocket Tavern, is likely to awaken some trouble but not from Hansen. What Hansen doesn't know is to what degree, for better or worse, things could get. Taut dialogue forms the heart and pace of The Warden's Game. Writing is clean, refined, how rather convincing. Eugen M. Bacon Amazon Shorts Author, The Hybrid/ Snow Metal
