It's all been said just voting for posterity July 17, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The first Hiaasen book I've ever read and likely the last. I liked the location and felt some empathy for the characters. I loved the place in the Everglades where the story was situated. I thought the plot was nicely developed and adequately intricate. My problem was I didn't feel the author gave them much interesting to say. It seemed the same predictable liines would come out of the main characters again and again and the story moved toward its inevitable conclusions. I thought the writing level was pretty basic too. Although perhaps it is his style to write in a very accessible manner. Aside from the language, and the odd esoteric word, I think a grade schooler could have made their way through the book.
I listened to this book on tape and thought the reader did a great job with all the voices. A fan of the author might get three stars out of this. I kept thinking about aborting the book-listening but it kept me hanging on ...just barely.
One piece of writing I did found descriptive was everything vile associated with the villain. I actually felt ill after listening to some of the passages describing his physical appearance. Well done there.
A quick, light summer read otherwise that is fairly unremarkable.

I can't wait for the next one. Reading his books is like going on vacation. You really have a good time but it is over too soon.
Not His Best July 7, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've read all Hiaseen books, this one might not be one of his best but it is still a very entertaining read.
Hiaasen is magic! July 7, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Nobody makes playing with words so much fun as Hiaasen does. He's got the most bizarre imagination. The cast of characters is crazy, the stories, as usual, get all interconnected, and the result is a fun and satisfying ride.
I found this book to be less philosophical and deep than some of his others. There wasn't an environmental "bad guy" out to destroy habitats to build a cheap housing development, though there definitely were a few bad guys who certainly didn't appreciate their surroundings. It was a lot more fun and quirky, and less of a morality tale.
Definitely a must-read for fans of Hiaasen. And if you're up for a crazy ride that's part mystery, part satire, and pure comedy, give it a whirl. I actually bought Brideshead Revisited to reread after Hiaasen was compared to Waugh - another classic satirist worth reading.

What a terrific and unique writer Mr. Hiaasen is. I can only surmise that he is quite a character himself. Another great, very entertaining book.
