This book starts off slow, but, after the 3rd chapter, I was completely hooked. I never wanted to put the book down and stayed up much later than I wanted to a couple of nights in a row to finish the book. A must read for fans of fantasy.

4 out of 5 stars A fantastic surprise   November 25, 2007

Recommended by a friend of a friend I had some doubts, I like my fantasy 'traditional'and so much of it these days is authors aiming for orginality and instead producing incomprehencible drivel. 'The Name of the Wind', however, reminds me of the books that got me into the genre in the first place. David Eddings is probably the best comparison I can think of; humorous, unpretentious and very readable.
Kvothe has retreated from the world that has built him into legend and reinvented himself as a simple innkeeper with only his sword, a locked chest and his companion/student Bast as reminders of his past. He seems determined if not content to see out his days in annonymity. That is until a famed historian seeks him out and coaxes his true story out of him.
'The Name of the Wind' is a fairly simple story told in retrospect, but it is told skillfully and that makes all the difference. My only concern is that the protanganist seems overly young to have done so much. I know this is kind of the point, but making him 35 rather than 25 would have made Kvothe's character seem more probable. This is not a major detraction however, and the rest of the story more than makes up for it.
Give it a go. I promise you'll enjoy the ride.
