Surprises Abound, And It Keeps You Guessing January 25, 2005 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Julianne Moore is NOT my favorite actress, but after having seen just about every movie in the video store I had little choice except to give The Forgotten a look.
Maybe it was because I wasn't expecting much that I found this movie actually very good. It was a little like being on a roller-coaster ride where ya can't see the next turn or twist. I thought the story moved along well, the acting was convincing, and the dialogue fit the happenings in a decent manner.
I think the less a person knows about this film before viewing it, the more they will enjoy it.
There is action, suspense, drama, and a little bit of (well, sort of) romance (maybe kindness is a better word).
I recommend this film, and since I am such an awesome movie reviewer, you should listen to me and buy it. Ignore the bad reviews; they don't know what they are talking about.
See ya next review.
If you like Dean Koontz, you'll love this movie. January 25, 2005 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This movie was excellent. Great story, excellent cast and the erie feeling you get while reading Dean Koontz. What more could you ask for. I thought the original theatrical ending was the best. The alternate ending was a little over done. I will definitely buy this one.
Forget it about it January 24, 2005 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
This sounded like a movie from "The Twilight Zone", when i read it at the rental store. The movie was ok and freaky up till the point where the Agents started coming in to the picture, that's when I knew this would turn out to be a preditcable and lame movie; I was right. Really lame, turn out to be about alien abduction. Totally uniteresting. This really be would've been an awesome and Twilight Zone like movie if it turned out to be a psychological thriller, and that the kid really never did exist or left us guessing whether he did or not.
What is wrong with film critics? January 24, 2005 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
A lot of reviewers have panned this film, but I can't figure out why. It's taut, well-acted, atmospheric. And it delivers several genuine scares without ever resorting to the all-too-common fake startle techniques that lesser films have to use. (That is, there are no moments where a sudden flurry of movement accompanied by a loud blast in the score turns out to be a cat jumping onto the table.)
The only criticism that seems to hold any water at all is that the filmmakers chose one possible route over another one. (I know that's vague, but I'm not going to spoil it.) But even that doesn't hold all that much water, since you just as easily make the same criticism if the explanation for the events had been different. Granted, the explanation is not the First Time Ever that such a story has been told, but since when is that prerequisite for a good film?
This is a strong thriller with some brilliant moments.
better than you might expect January 23, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The true test of whether or not to buy a DVD is whether or not you will watch the film three times within the next three years. The Forgotten is one of those movies that is definitely worth a second viewing, but I'm on the fence about whether or not it would pass the 3x3 rule.
First, Julianne Moore as Telly does a great job. Because of the snowstorms recently, we've been socked in the house and have had a chance to see the Village, Cellular, and the Forgotten in pretty short order. I'm rating the Village a little higher than the Forgotten, and the Forgotten a little bit better than Cellular, but of all of the acting performances, Julianne does the best job. She carries this movie. She has this ineffable, compelling quality about her grief and determination that you don't really appreciate until you see an over the top histrionic performance like the one Kim Basinger gave in Cellular to compare it to.
Second, the pacing is better than Cellular. There are three "jolt" moments in the Forgotten that are very well-done, and the first third of the movie is particularly compelling, even though a lot of it is about Telly locked in her thoughts and consumed by her grief for her child. Cellular wasn't badly done, it's just that they went for comic side beats every now and then instead of opting to sustain the tension (and focus).
This is a movie about the power of a mother's love, and this is going to be terrifically appealing on a thematic and emotional basis for some folks. That being said, some men may not be as enthralled by it, because quite frankly, the male actors weren't operating at as high a level as Ms. Moore, there's an awful lot of pointless running in this movie, and the end is weak (I won't spoil it, but the end leaves a lot to be desired).
Its qualities surpass its defects. It's not bad.
