An hour and 30 minutes of DISAPPOINTMENT! January 14, 2005 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This movie was the worst movie ever. I was suckered into the theatre by all the "preview hype." I sat down ready to be freaked out and when people started disappearing into the sky I thought something really good was about to happen. Instead, the movie came to an abrupt end and I was left with nothing but dissappointment! I think that may have been the movie's theme.
May the sky zap this, too, into oblivion. January 12, 2005 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
**some spoilers ahead (not the two endings)**
The premise of this movie is so ingenious, it will receive your good graces. That is until The Secret Government Agency Who Is Watching steps into the story, at which point the movie unravels into little ribbons and falls on the floor--and then goes on for another hour.
The problem is that this movie should have taken its first act--as Julianne Moore is forced to question whether her dead son ever really existed--and spread it across an entire film. How about exploring this fascinating idea, manipulating the audience, making us question her sanity as well?
No way. Instead of subtlety, suspense, character, we get...a movie full of car chases. (can you hear the producer now? "we need car chases for the trailer!...")
By playing all of its cards in a hopelessly rushed beginning, there is nothing for anyone to do but run, hide, and scream "where are the children?!" about 24,000 times for the duration of the film.
And what painful, Ed Woodian, embarrassing dialogue scenes this movie has! You cannot beat that moment when Moore and Dominic West hysterically interrogate the FBI agent: not a moment either of these two actors will want mentioned in their A&E Biographies.
There is a female NYC detective on the case whose motivations make zero sense. What in the name of Law & Order is this character doing in this movie? How many New York detectives do you know who would give this looney, raving mom the benefit of the doubt?
And that ending. It's a shocker, but in the wrong way. It just doesn't work, but by this time the story has spun so out of control, it scarcely matters.
The DVD includes an alternate ending that is actually a tiny molecule more satisfying. Maybe if it had been staged with any restraint--rather than recycling lame special effects from "Forbidden Planet," for instance--it might have left a better taste in my mouth.
Yet another perplexing disaster among the latest Hollywood "thrillers."
I give this movie some credit... January 7, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I would claim this to be one of my favorite movies if they didn't ruin it in the end with the people stealing kids being aliens! I mean the whole consept of the FBI stealing kids was a great story line (totally scary because it would be believable), but like any truly great movie it had to be ruined by aliens. Which for me didn't work in this movie. I just was disappointed that the acting and story line of missing kids would be overpowered by aliens and their plot. Those of you who enjoy alien stories may enjoy this those of you who didn't know it had aliens unti I said it may want to wait until it comes out on video. It may be something you like or it may disappoint you as it did me.
Very Forgettable January 5, 2005 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'd be willing to bet that the script for this movie read pretty well. A psychological thriller that brings up questions about our place in the universe, and delves into the supernatural psyche. With Julianne Moore and Gary Sinise starring, I had to see this movie. Sadly, it is possibly the worst acted movie of 2004.
The plot gives away too much too soon, and fails to fully establish Telly Paretta (Moore) as a character whose pain we should share or understand. Everything felt very rushed and superficial. Sinise actually did a decent job in his role as Paretta's psychologist, Dr. Jack Munce. Unfortunately it was a limited role so Sinise wasn't able to leave a lasting impact on the general feel of the movie.
Paretta is aided in her quest to find her long-lost son by former hockey star Ash Correll (Dominic West). West was good in Chicago and Mona Lisa Smile, but his mind was apparantly elsewhere while filming this movie. His lack of conviction behind his supposed emotions was laughable, and I probably rolled my eyes during every scene he was involved in.
What could have been a pretty good flick along the lines of The Sixth Sense or Signs ended up muddled in it's own unwillingness to slow down and not take itself so seriously. I highly recommend you avoid this stinker. I wish I could forget it.
(This is based on the theatrical release of the film.)
Scary w/ out the horror December 31, 2004 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love movies like this. There is a big difference between terror and horror. These are the type that your typical horror movie lover (who likes to see serial killers go after people w/ machetes) runs from. There's no gore, no flying limbs. All the terror comes from noises and usually supernatural things in the story. I really liked this movie; Julianne is a great actress and the story picks up right away. The unknown and not knowing what's out there that you can't see is scary and that's what this movie is about, along w/ controlling forces. The only thing I'd change was a little bit of the ending. Also I liked the father of the girl and Julianne's character together; they had great chemistry. Other movies I suggest in this category would be The Grudge, Darkness, and White Noise. Also maybe The Ring although the ending freaked me out. Which also brings to mind the older Mothman Phophesies...
