 Totally believable April 24, 2008
Best movie I've seen in years, pay attention because it will hold you right up to the final scene.
Intelligent filmmaking April 23, 2008
In his enthusiastic review of this film, Roger Ebert argued that "Michael Clayton'' isn't a message movie. In a way, he's right. "Michael Clayton'' isn't about a specific issue. It's not a rant against nuclear power, an attack on pharmaceutical companies, a critique of U.S. foreign policy or an appeal for consumers to stop buying conflict diamonds. But "Michael Clayton'' does, I think, have a profound message. It asks us to reflect on what we're doing with our lives. None of the movie's villains comes off as particularly evil. They just seem to have found themselves in jobs that require them to do evil things. Two hired thugs seem like reliable handymen, unenthusiastic but willing to carry out a hit for cash. A mob enforcer comes across as a stern uncle. And Tilda Swinton - in a role that won her a well-deserved Oscar - is driven not so much by greed or lust for power as by a near-hysterical fear of career failure. As in-house council for a huge agro-chemical firm, she has neither the time nor the peace of mind to enjoy any of the money she makes. She seems uncomfortable, straining inside her own skin. And you see why she's so damaged: To climb the corporate ladder, she has had to abandon any semblance of a personal life and any sense of perspective about what is right and what is wrong. Two other characters - hotshot lawyer Tom Wilkinson and all-purpose fixer George Clooney - have for different reasons been forced to reevaluate what they live and work for. Don't worry. "Michael Clayton'' isn't a screed. It's a well-crafted legal thriller, driven by strong acting and Clooney's astonishing star power. (My only complaint: I would like to have seen more evidence of Clooney's "fixing'' skills and a little more explanation of how he switched from prosecuting bad guys to working with them.) But "Michael Clayton'' has a seriousness of purpose, a moral grounding, you don't often find in today's entertainments.

The tip-off is that Mr. Gilroy has proven himself as a franchise writer (Bourne series). Well, how much does this count? Not much, when a writer can't learn from The Insider or The Verdict. The movie unnnecessarily takes you places that do not figure. For awhile, I felt like Michael Clayton was angry over his destroyed vehicle. The real issue was so veiled and suggested that one can only focus on Clayton (Clooney)who gives no clue nor suggests how to proceed. In "Three Days Of the Condor," there was no problem knowing from the start where the bad guys are coming from.In "Michael Clayton" you never know. Reading about Monsanto, the chemical conglomerate,in May's Vanity Fair makes it clear who the baddies should have been. What's at stake gets tremendous down time in this pot-boiler which only builds to simmering aggravation over ruined bling. Gilroy, reputation and all, only scratches the surface like a novice film student here fumbling the big kahuna. Watch "Silkwood" instead for tension and frights.

Some time ago, I'm not sure quite when, I lost faith in the Academy Awards, Hollywood, and let's face it, mankind in general. There are times when I've questioned the wisdom of my conclusions, whether some prior biases may account for my bleak views on modern cinema and people's opinions of it. Then, a movie like Michael Clayton comes along, and I feel nothing but vindication and confirmation of these bleak views.
The fact that a movie like this gets nominated for awards, that critics and movie fans alike praise it's accomplishments, proves to me the lack of general intelligence and taste and the unending tendency towards hippocracy and pretention that modern America is possesed with.
Why bother saying why this movie is such garbage. To even dignify it with such analysis only lends credence to the credit others would give to it. That other brilliant films will go unnoticed while a pretentious, pompous piece of shallow Hollywood fluff like this gets nominations, is something that is truely beyond my comprehention. If you liked this, you probably liked "Crash." Go home, get out your scented candles, open up the "I Ching," put some more carwax on your Range Rover, and enjoy your dinner out tonight at Spagos. You will never know what real art and creativity is, but luckily, you will be accompanied by so many quasi-intellectual schmucks, you'll never know the difference.
