The First Batman to make Comic Fans Proud June 20, 2005 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
As a long time fan of Batman I have longed to see a big screen Batman that displayed the depth and power of the character I had come to enjoy while reading: Batman: Year One, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Batman: The Long Halloween, Batman: The Killing Joke.
I longed for a Batman movie where Batman was not overshadowed by the villians he fights. When I first heard about this movie I almost screamed in pain, expecting another Joel Schuemacher insult to Batman. A movie that had more in common with the campy Adam West series of the 60's then the character I had come to enjoy in the comic books.
Walking in with no expectations I was blown away by what I saw. Here was a movie that not only reached the dark, film noir levels of Tim Burton's original Batman, but reached even farther. I could almost see flashes of Frank Miller in the script with I'm sure fans of Batman: Year One will recognize and enjoy.
I know some people don't like how the fight scenes were shot in this film, but I think they were perfect. You don't get to see all of Batman's style, but it makes the fights seem more real. Like you are there trying to follow a real fight between Batman and the thugs of Gothman's underworld. It highten's the drama, and makes the movie seem less like just another hollywood action film with crisp easy to see fights. If there is a sequel I implore Chris Nolan to leave the fight scenes like he did in this movie.
Batman Begins is filled with great performance from Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Liam Nieson, and Gary Oldman. But not even that all-star supporting cast can steal the light from Christian Bale. As Batman he delievers the sharp obessiveness that I had come to look for in Batman. For that is the Key in my mind to Batman, Bruce Wayne died the night his parents died, and in the pain of that night Batman was born.
Average June 20, 2005 3 out of 10 found this review helpful
"Batman Returns" may satisfy aficionados, but it it won't create converts. As a comic book adaptation, it is average. Those who are not particularly enthusiastic about the genre will most likely just watch as the movie goes by, unwilling to be fully drawn in to the fantasy universe of Gotham City in "Batman Begins".
The special effects are decent and the City looks real. The acting, however, particularly on the part of Christian Bale, is near non-existent. As for the training sequences, the story is bland, stale and sometimes unexplained. The fight choreography fails to impress, as the editing is too heavy-handed.
Unlike the rest of the Batman series the script of "Begins" tells the story of Batman as a boy. The story of Boy Bruce Wayne is in line with the movie as a whole, as it is interesting in some some regards and unconvincing in many others.
The Best Batman Yet June 20, 2005 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
I was fortunate enough to catch the June 6th screener of this movie. Not only is this the best Batman movie so far, it's quite possibly the best comic book-based movie ever.
Fair warning - if the wild neon lights and anatomically correct suits of the previous 2 films were your cup of tea, this movie is not for you. In fact, unlike any of the previous films, this one centers on Bruce Wayne and his evolution into Batman. He doesn't even appear in costume until halfway through the movie.
Batman Begins is dark, intense, and completely faithful to the source material. Christian Bale nails the parts of Batman and Bruce Wayne perfectly. It also doesn't hurt that the supporting cast is stellar, featuring names like Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Katie Holmes, Rutger Hauer, Liam Neeson and Michael Kaine. The story flows fast and fierce, with few slow points. There is even a perfect segue into a possible sequel in the movie's final scene.
This movie comes with my highest possible recommendation.
Good movie overall... not the best for Batman though June 20, 2005 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
I'm extremely partial to Batman Returns and Batman: The Animated Series (As well as a bit of Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker) and in my mind nothing gets better than that. It's those kinds of showings that really mark what Batman is to me. I just figured I'd put that out there before I got into Batman Begins.
First off, the cast was well chosen but... the villains weren't really how I thought they should have been. I loved the supernatural feel through Batman: T.A.S. and this was... well... a bit too much like a real life sort of thing. The car was also a little disappointing and in a way... just made it one of the things that made me want to say "This isn't Batman, it's a character in a suit saying he's Batman". OK, onto things I liked. Gary Oldman. He did a good job of playing Gordon because he was someone you could tell wanted to do his job right. That's what Gordon is supposed to be about. One of the few good cops in a corrupt city. Next... the batcave. I really do prefer the new cave over the last ones. It's a lot more realistic and more... well... cave. There shouldn't be more technology than cave in my opinion, regardless of how much cash you have. Also to put it out there... *SPOILER, DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT YET* I had a dream that I was Bruce Wayne and I burned my house down and rebuilt it. I had that dream before I knew anything about the movie. So... it's weird that it happened in the movie. Really weird.
Batman Begins and Returns to top form June 20, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Batman was quite literally on his deathbed after the mess that was Batman and Robin. It was a nail in the coffin that super hero movies had been building themselves during the 90s.
X-men really started a new craze in Hollywood by being a super hero movie that was actually enjoyable. Spiderman continued the new fad. Yes, there are still failures in the super hero movie world, The Hulk, Punisher, etc. But, this latest venture into comic book reality is amazing. Batman Begins is Premium Super Hero Movie Making!
Not since Tim Burton had the helm in the first Batman has a Batman movie been this good. Better yet, this movie might actually be better than Burton's vision. Christian Bale might never be better than Keaton as Batman, but for the time being Bale is the best we have. And truthfully there could not be a better choice for the Dark Knight.
There are small instances of comic humor in this movie, but for once, reality prevails in a comic book movie. This movie looks and feels great. The effects are state of the art, the bat-gadgets are actually believable and have a hint of science behind them, and the action isn't totally ridiculous (i.e. the Mighty Morphin "Batman and Robin")
This movie deserves five stars for reinvigorating a dying movie franchise. It is a great time and will please many a movie goer.
