4 out of 5 stars Very good.   June 17, 2005
Batman Begins is a very good action movie, with a decent plot. This is probably the most true to the current comic Batman any of the movies has gotten and Bale is the best Batman since Michael Keaton, possibly even better than Keaton but I think it's too early to make that call (we'll see what he does in the sequel).

About 30% of the movie tells the origin of Batman. On screen, in the past we've seen why Batman became Batman. In this movie we finally learn how that all came about and it's adapted well from the comic origin written years ago. I've read some reviews that claim "this is the best comic movie to date" or "this is one you can actually believe could happen", both comments are ridiculous, this is most definately a comic book movie, while Batman doesn't have super powers, he never has in any of his on screen personas.

I gave it four stars because it's a very entertaining movie, that manages to take an exhausted franchise and bring it back to life in a big way for yet another generation. Staying inside the comic movie genre; while it didn't deliver the same emotional intensity as Spiderman II, Batman Begins is certainly is a very good movie with quite a few unexpected twist and turns, among the best of the comic movies ever made.

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Film   June 17, 2005

I'll tell you right now. I have always HATED Batman. This movie changed it all. The story is gripping and the action is intense. There are some sad and scary elements in there as well. If you're a fan of Batman, you've got to see it. If you're not a fan, you'll probably enjoy it anyway. 5 stars, 2 thumbs way up and highest recommendations.

5 out of 5 stars A truly terrific film.   June 17, 2005
Though fans of Tim Burton's classic and original Batman film will protest, Batman Begins is the truly worthy and superior adaptation of the Dark Knight, more faithful and more impressive in every regard. Essentially a "rewind and erase" for the Batman franchise, the Christopher Nolan directed (Memento, Insomnia) and David Goyer written (Blade Trilogy, Dark City) picture borrows heavily from Frank Miller's Batman: Year One comic series and takes viewers back to the beginning, where we watch a young Bruce Wayne survive the emotional trauma of his parents murder and grow into the dedicated and almost fanatically driven masked vigilante known as Batman. Christian Bale is perfectly cast as Bruce Wayne and gives the character a more three-dimensional performance than previously seen. Reduced to one-liners and background shots in the previous Batman films, the character of Alfred becomes both a guiding figure and pillar of emotional support for the young Wayne in Batman Begins, and Michael Caine is nothing short of iconic in the role. The rest of the film's supporting cast is sensational, including Liam Neeson (in a terrifically multisided performance), Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Ken Watanabe, Cillian Murphy, and Tom Wilkinson, and all hit their marks and deliver their lines like true professionals. Katie Holmes is the one exception however, as she lacks the presence and charisma needed to make do with her underwritten and woefully weak character of Rachel. The film's script is deeper and more intricately layered than any previous attempt, and benefits greatly from it; father figures and themes of loss, guidance and fear run as strong undercurrents throughout the entire picture. Batman Begins is also ambitious as it attempts to transform a campy and ludicrous concept (a man in a bat suit and cape fighting crime) into a gritty, plausible and almost believable reality. For the most part, Nolan and his team succeed and the end result is a more emotional and exciting movie. Though Danny Elfman's classic Batman theme is sorely missed initially, Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard's moody but rousing score grows on the viewer with each viewing, and contains some of the best work from both composers to date. If there is any true complaint to be had with Batman Begins, it's that its action scenes lack intensity and interest. In an obvious attempt to avoid the recent influx of Hong Kong styled action, Nolan shoots his more realistic, krav maga rather than kung fu-inspired violence closely cropped and with quick editing (more akin to The Bourne Identity than The Matrix). Unfortunately, much of the action gets lost in the process. Still, the movie as a whole is close to a modern classic in almost every sense. A great adventure film and surprisingly functional character drama, Batman Begins is a quality piece on every level and worth owning. Die hard Batman fans and newcomers alike can smile, as director Nolan and writer Goyer have done the Dark Knight justice.

4 out of 5 stars Cool movie but NOT "THE BEST EVER"   June 17, 2005

I know you recent movie goers have just come out of the theatre recently. I did too. We're charged up but don't get out of control. Get a Bat-grip on yourself. The BEST Batman movie was the 1989 Tim Burton original. Batman Returns comes next and Batman Begins is somewhere around there. The Schumacher ones, while not being superb, still have their moments.

The Batsuit did make Bale look sometimes like FATman. The Batarangs were rusty looking and not cool enough. I like the action sequences and how the story circled on fear. The early training stuff seemed to go a little too fast.

All in all, Batman Begins is a good movie. I just think people need to think twice before they label Bale better than Keaton. HEEEELLL NOO!!! :O

5 out of 5 stars NOW BATMAN REALLY BEGINS!!!!!!!!   June 17, 2005

I WAS SO DISAPPOINTED IN THE LAST TWO FILMS! WHO WASN'T? BATMAN BECAME MORE OF A HOLLYWOOD CELEBRETY, HE WAS TOO BUSY LOOKING MACHO RATHER THAN MYSTERIOUS, ROBIN WAS A PATHETIC ADDITION, THE VILLAINS WERE ALL BRAINLESS NUTJOBS WITH PATHETIC LINES, AND TO TOP IT OFF GOTHAM LOOKED MORE LIKE LAS VEGAS RATHER THEN SOME GOTHIC CITY! ANY OF THIS FOUND IN "BEGINS"? NOPE! CHRISTIAN BALE WHO HAS BEEN ONE OF MY FAVORITE ACTORS EVER SINCE I SAW HIM ON AMERICAN PSYCHO IS BY FAR THE BEST BATMAN YET. HIS ACTING WAS SUPERB. THE MOVIE FOCUSED FAR MORE ON BATMAN THAN ANY OTHER PERSON IN THE FILM ALTHOUGH I REALLY LIKED GARY OLDMAN'S PERFORMANCE AS AN EARLY DAYS LIEUTENANT GORDON. KATIE HOLMES ALTHOUGH PLEASANT TO LOOK AT WAS SADLY WASTED IN THIS MOVIE. MORGAN FREEMAN SHINES AS ALWAYS AS HE DID IN OTHER MOVIES LIKE SEVEN AND LEAN ON ME AS BRUCE WAYNES PARTNER AND FRIEND LUCIUS FOX. CILLIAN MURPHY WHO I REALLY LIKED ON 28 DAYS LATER WAS THE PERFECT PICK FOR DR. JONATHAN CRANE AKA THE SCARECROW. LIAM NEESON WHO SURPRISED ME A LOT IN THIS MOVIE WAS AWE-INSPIRING AS THE INSTRUCTOR FOR BRUCE WAYNE IN THE WAYS OF THE NINJA. HIS TRANSITION TO AN ANTAGONIST LATER ON IN THE MOVIE WAS REDICULOUSLY PERFECT. NO OTHER ACTOR COULD HAVE PULLED IT OFF. AND TO TOP IT OFF, MICHAEL CAINE AS THE ALWAYS FUNNY AND AT THE SAME TIME UPTIGHT FAITHFUL BUTLER ALFRED PENNYWORTH. HIS PERFORMANCE EASILY RIVALED MICHAEL GOUGH'S PERFORMANCE IN THE OTHER FILMS AND EVEN SURPASSED IT AT TIMES. HE'S SO SERIOUS IN THIS MOVIE AND THAT'S WHAT MAKES HIM FUNNY. CHRISTIAN BALE IS STILL THE TOP HOMBRE IN THIS FILM. HE PORTRAYS THE TROUBLED YOUNG BRUCE WAYNE IN A WAY THAT SHOWS THE VIEWER THAT THERE REALLY IS A SCARED AND VENGEFUL CHILD BEHIND THAT PLAYBOY IMAGE. LIKE I SAID, BALE IS BY FAR THE BEST OUT OF ALL THE BATMANS, YES EVEN BETTER THAN THE AWESOME MICHAEL KEATON! IF YOU ARE HOPING FOR A VINDICATION FROM THE LAST TWO FILMS OR EVEN ALL OF THEM, THIS IS IT! PLEASE GO SEE IT! I WANT MORE SEQUELS!
