Charlie Wilson's War April 29, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Somebody send a couple hundred copies of this movie to the White House and Congress! George W (Wonderidiot) Bush has got US playing the part of the old Soviet Union and the Iranians are having a ball bleeding our economy as we lose thouands of precious lives of our men and women. Thanks George! Just watch the movie and try to get us out of the damn mess you have created.
A very good movie... April 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I can't speak for how much of the movie was true to history but as movies go this was just a very good movie to sit back and watch- it kept things interesting and if you learned a little something along the way all the better.
Entertaining from Start to Finish April 29, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Before seeing Hanks in this movie, I didn't care for him that much. He really pulls off the role of "Good Time Charlie Wilson" in this movie. What really was a surprise to me was what a great job Julia Roberts did in portraying the rich Texas socialite who influenced Wilson. It always seemed to me she was good at ditzy blonde roles and perhaps not much else. She proved otherwise in this movie. Philip Seymour Hoffman's portrayal of Gust Avrakotos was the best and apparently he was nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actor. The movie really points out that ordinary people, even those with serious character flaws can be true heroes. Charlie Wilson was in large part responsible for the largest covert operation in U.S. history, an operation that eventually led to the defeat of the soviets in Afghanistan.
Ugh! Too difficult to sit through. April 29, 2008 4 out of 20 found this review helpful
I rarely write negative reviews, but this one calls for it. I found this movie to be almost pornographic in nature, with its heavy emphasis on Charlie Wilson's involvement with women. Way too much is shown that is not needed for the story. While I think overall the story may have some merit, I don't think it is worth sitting through all the disgusting elements of the film. It basically just portrays some very shallow and crassy people. The people I was watching it with all agreed it was simply unbearable.
GOOD TIME CHARLIE April 27, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Growing up in the Houston area, I was always hearing about Charlie Wilson and his antics in Washington, it was refreshing in a way to see a congressman so unabashedly free, his constituents loved him and he was a good congressman, but really I had no idea that he helped ignite a proxy war in Afganistan. Tom Hanks is perfect as Charlie, he looks like him and he has his fun loving swagger, but you never forget that Wilson is nobody's fool, he may be fun loving and a bit wild, but he is a policy wonk of the first order. I liked Roberts as the Houston socialite Herring, I have met Ms. Herring and she is indeed a force of nature. Hoffman is excellent as usual and he and Hanks are a laugh riot, now THEY have great chemistry. I really enjoyed this film, and to think it's based on a true story is amazing. Of course, Wilsons proxy war has had major blowback, and I appreciate that the film touches on this and the ending is well done. Hoffmans story he tells Hanks at the end is straight up genius, it's a shame America never seem to think about these things as we practice imperial real politik...all and all fun movie, highly recommended.
