Punxsutawney Bill February 18, 2008 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
Hard to believe it has been fifteen years since this comedy classic was released. Fortunately GROUNDHOG DAY is standing the test of time and is still one of the funniest films ever made. If you don't know the premise Bill Murray stars as an obnoxious Pittsburgh weatherman who resents almost everything about his job and especially his annual trip to small town Punxsutawney, PA to cover the Groundhog Day festival there. After behaving abominably to his producer(Andie MacDowell), cameraman (Chris Elliot) and all the small town folk there a blizzard comes in and closes all the roads out of Punxsutawney putting Bill in panic stricken sarcasm overdrive. But the blizzard is the least of his problems. Bill finds by some magical time loop he has to keep repeating February 2 until he gets it right. Highly recommended though I will warn you I had the tune to Pennsylvania Polka in my head for several days after watching this.
Love This Movie February 15, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Yes, I love this movie. I wore out my VHS copy and I've gone on to DVD players. Can clearly remember the day in 1993, when I first saw it!! Such a great blending of fantastic comedy and indepth analysis of real-life and how all of us (yes, I mean ALL of us) continue to do the same things overandoverandover again and again. Creatures of habit. But after running into the same wall enough times, sometimes we learn. And after we learn the lesson overandoverandagain sometimes we change. MY new lifetime goal is to take in a GroundHog Day/February 2nd in Woodstock, IL sometime soon.
a philosophical study February 14, 2008 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
a middle aged man's coming of age story. watching this movie with adult eyes, i was struck by the detailed structure. bill is already repeating a groundhog's day his whole life, an empty existence. at first, that's how interprets and exploits his new existence, through empty gluttony. then he takes the challenge of seducing andie, but it's not love. then he goes through depression and torments, negating his existence thru suicide attempts. finally, he accepts his fate, and looks to enrich himself thru literature, music, and art, while at the same time reaching out to others and becoming fully human. thru this process, he naturally wins the heart of andie, as he becomes a man, one willing to give and not only receive.
the gift is that this story is told with so much humor, that one doesn't realize the structured details at first. although there are some rough spots, it is highly crafted and tells an intricate story upon inspection and reflection.
Most boring Murray film ever February 14, 2008 1 out of 22 found this review helpful
I have always been a Bill Murray fan. This movie is dull, it goes beyond repetitious, and it gets so old after the second iteration, its not funny. The only benefit I can think of from watching this video is that it may dull your senses into slumber if you are an insomniac.
Groundhog Day with the Most Extras February 5, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
First, buy this Special 15th Anniversary Edition for the movie. There are so many reasons why this movie is special. Danny Rubin's creative genius. Harold Ramis's writing and directing skill. The cast of characters. The generous performances of Andie MacDowell and Chris Elliot. And the amazing performance by Bill Murray. Decades from now this movie will be a classic for good reason. It's an original, intelligent, funny, and uplifting film.
If that doesn't sell you, then buy this DVD because it has the extras. Harold Ramis provides much insight into the film by way of his audio commentary and his "A Different Day" interview. Ramis, Danny Rubin, Trevor Albert, Andie MacDowell, and Steven Tobolowski give further insights in "The Weight of Time" documentary. Finally, even the deleted scenes add a few laughs.
I wouldn't recommend it merely on the strength of "The Study of Groundhogs: A Real Life Look at Marmots" documentary. It is... a little too focused. And it sure would have been nice to get an interview or some commentary from Bill Murray. Still, this is a great film, with many extras.
