THE PUNCH NOT THE PUNCHLINE PREVAILS June 6, 2007 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
What shines through this book is friendship, intelligence, and joy. These two guys clearly love philosophy and talking to each other and laughing as an antidote to all other alternatives to the mortal coil and the rest that may beset us, or befall us, given banana peels, and ambition. They know their philosophy and have learned it better by teaching it to each other. We are really overhearing an ongoing conversation--they've been buddies since their twenties and they approach seventy as they put this book together, in motels in Massachusetts where they both live with their wives. It's impossible to tell which of them is which, and lots of the book takes its cue from the original wetern philosopher (Plato) and is in dialogue form, as jokes also are. As I never did love philosophy, I think my stars are for such a compendium of jokes we don't have to feel guilty about reading straight, like being told a straight shot of Scotch is after all medicinal. Bravo!
Very funny book! June 4, 2007 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
If you like philosophy and you have a sense of humor, you'll LOVE this book. I laughed and I learned ... what more can I ask for from a book?
Philosophy 1, but with humor (sort of) May 20, 2007 18 out of 32 found this review helpful
This is a noble attempt to print out what must be terrific lectures that bring philosophical approaches into clarity for unitiated novices. Unfortunately, the jokes do not always translate well. I want to love this book, but feel frustrated when the jokes ring hollow (or with a thud). Better luck next time.
Great on NPR May 19, 2007 11 out of 25 found this review helpful
I bought this book after hearing the authors on NPR -- they've been on Weekend Edition and Whad'ya Know? and they're hilarious!!!
Hysterically funny May 18, 2007 11 out of 20 found this review helpful
Great book for the philosopher in your life ... or just someone who may be a little too serious ... especially loved the "timeline" at the end ...
