Sweet, sad stories from grandpa November 11, 2008 My grandpa spent time in and around the area in the 1930s and 1940s, working at his cousin's trading post, and claimed to have known Uncle Jimmy as an old man. In his garden he had statues of a prospector and a mule, and after he gave me this book (and my own resin 'Brighty", we would talk about "burros" as he always called Brighty, and his time in the desert. This book is a nice Wild West adventure, complete with a badguy who really did scare me as a kid. There is something stark and melancholy about the setting and the story, as well as the "typical' Marguerite Henry romanticisation, but it's a nice little story for kids interested in the Grand Canyon, the West, history, etc. I think my brother - a history buff from the moment he could read - got more out of Brighty than I did - I preferred "King of the Wind." But the memories of grandpa and his "burros" will always be immortalized in this book for me, just as my love for horses (and their kin) will always be a tribute to Grandpa's memory.

My favorite book as a child. Purchased for my 8 year old granddaughter. Hope she reads it and enjoys it.
great classic - not the size expected November 30, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I loved the Henry books as a grade schooler and wished that my mother hadn't given away all my books while I was in college. I'm now trying to rebuild that part of my library and assumed that the hardcover version ordered would be the size of the original 'classic' printing. Instead, this is a mini-book in comparison. Just be aware of that when ordering. For those looking for other animal book series that a nature-loving child might enjoy, consider Jim Kjelgaard's books (Big Red, Irish Red etc), and Gerald Durrell (My Family and other Animals etc).
Brighty -- Still a great read! August 9, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
At age 54 I decided to add this book to my classic children's collection. I was delighted to find when I read it again after 43 years, it still was a charming, fun book from beginning to end!
Brighty Review January 5, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I ordered this book for my wife as we had just returned from the Grand Canyon and she had expressed interest in Brighty...she even bought a small stuffed Brighty. Anyway, the format of the book is really cute as it reminded me of books I read in grammer school. As I understand, the story is based on some level of fact. I have seen references to Brighty in the Grand Canyon Association news and in the Death in Grand Canyon book. It is a fun read and provides a little history of the Grand Canyon. Anyone with an interest in animals, the outdoors or the Grand Canyou will enjoy this book.
