My Side of the Mountain is a wonderful adventure about a boy named Sam Gribley who is getting tired of living in the city and runs away to the Catskill mountains in New York. He learns how to use different plants and animals to make food and shelter in the wild. I like it becaus it has so many wonderful adventures and information about living in the mountains. if you like nature, and reading about it, you will probably like this book.
FACINATING STORY LINE February 23, 2006 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This trilogy is excellent for a nine year old!
My child is drawn back to the book, lingers in personal reading time longer and dialogs about the story after each session.
The story is written in a facinating way and draws the reader in to the life of this young pioneer.
A worthy read November 16, 2005 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
'I am on my mountain in a tree home that people have passed without ever knowing that I am here. The house is a hemlock tree six feet in diameter, and must be as old as the mountain itself. I came upon it last summer and dug and burned it out until I made a snug cave in the tree that I now call home. ' -Sam Gibley
As a dissatisfied teenager I wanted to escape; to be self sufficient, independent, heroic. I wanted a pet falcon, to live in a hollow tree, to earn the respect of my parents with my skill and sense of responsibility. At the time the vicarious experience reading My Side of the Mountain satisfied, to some extent, these yearnings.
Now there is a trilogy of stories about the wilderness adventures of young Sam Gribley and his falcon by award winning author Jean Criaghead George. A worthy read for the anyone who has imagined themselves alone in the wild.
Excellent outdoor adventures May 23, 2004 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I loved this trilogy because I like the outdoors and falcons. They are a great read because it shows examples of how humans can take care of the earth and keep our beautiful animals safe. It teaches you skills you can use if you get lost; what to eat, how to find shelter; etc. Just a wonderful series.
