5 out of 5 stars Wolf Brother   December 3, 2002
Excepts of 2/17/02 Juneau Empire newspaper review by Ann Chandonnet: "Wolf Brother will appeal to readers of 'Old Yeller,' 'White Fang' "Dances with Wolves' and 'Gentle Ben.'
It is a well-paced, exciting novel suitable for readers 10 years and up, with plenty of action of the life-threatening kind. The hero , Ben James, 14, a lanky Tlingit youth, is stranded in the wilds of British Columbia by airplace problems. Initially, he has the guidance and companionship of his grandfather, who instructs him about woodscraft such as snaring rabbits. But his grandfather soon grows weak and dies.
The difficulty of having dialogue when the hero is alone is solved by the introduction of a wild wolf, who becomes Ben's companion in hunting, exploring, and outwitting a seven-foot-tall wounded grizzly that stalks him. Ben's addressing him aloud, gives the sense of a two-way conversation.
Wolf Brother contains more adventure than 10 average books of this sort. Its credibility and detail are due to the fact that Ferrell is a tireless, inquisitive researcher who spends his retirement combing archives and writing about the North Country.
For this particular effort, Ferrell quizzed Juneau medicine man and Tlingit elder, Cyrus Peck Jr., about clans and the spiritual nature of Tlingit customs."
