3 out of 5 stars the secret of the rose   February 15, 2008

I found this book to be an entertaining and educational book for children, however, I cannot help but compare it to John Louis Beatty's "Master Rosalind" written over thirty years ago. The plot is very similar: a girl in Elizabethan England dresses as a boy and finds employment with famous players and playwrites of the day. The name of the title character is even the same. I would recommend Beatty's book which is exquisitely written and historically accurate before I would recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars An Absorbing, Important Novel   May 29, 2007

THE SECRET OF THE ROSE is an absorbing, fast-paced novel with an unusually fully-developed and admirable young heroine. As an English teacher, I think this book would be a fine way to introduce students to the Elizabethan period and to some notable literary and political figures. Perhaps even more important, the book calls attention to the cruel consequences of religious intolerance--an important message for students who hear about religious conflicts in various parts of the world today, often between groups that should be able to realize how much they have in common.

5 out of 5 stars A new, intriguing perspective for kids   September 15, 2006
Great read! The author takes you through some familiar territory but through the eyes of a relatively unknown character. Refreshing, a fast read, and memorable! Very good for young & not-so-young adults!
