Highly educational book that will keep your child occupied for hours November 30, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This hardcover book is unique as both a fact book and a play set. A fold out panoramic view of the rain forest with animal puzzle pieces in each chapter, allows a child to role play with animal figures. The play set can also be broken down into its component parts to be re-assembled later.
Recommended for 8 year olds and up, the reading level is appropriate for a 2nd grader or above. The illustrations are vibrant in color and well done. Chapters are organized by animal with numerous factoids about the habitat, behavior, diet and characteristics. A puzzle piece of each animal is compartmentalized into little envelopes in each chapter.
This is a great book for traveling (hotel room) or some place where a decent amount of space can be used to set up the backdrop and figures (size of a small end table or coffee table).
The only limitation of this set: No envelope/jacket for the rain-forest backdrop.
VERDICT:
This book is highly educational and will keep your child occupied.
Great homeschool resource November 10, 2008 What a great way to bring the child "into" the rainforest! We used this book with a zoo trip, The Great Kapok Tree: A Tale of the Amazon Rain Forest by Lynn Cherry, Rain Forests (Magic Tree House Research Guide), How to Draw Animals, plus a website for a complete 2-week unit on rainforests. The field guide was something my son looked forward to. Working independently, he studied a new animal each day and set it up in the diorama. Then he would explain it to me in a short presentation, drawing, or written report. The slotted-paper figures from the book are sturdy enough for gentle play. I can't wait to use the others in this series.
Great animal fun March 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We just bought this book last night at the school book fair (where we paid $15.95 for it) and have already finished the book. My son loves animals, so the book was a great choice. It's nicely written and illustrated in the style of a field journal. There are four pages on each of eight animals, each with a sturdy, attractive model easily built: jaguar, scarlet macaw, squirrel monkey, tapir, dward caiman, Amazon river dolphin, coati, and vampire bat. There is also a 3-D scene to tear out and set up, a nice backdrop for the eight animal models. So it's a great book and toy in one.
My seven-year-old son says the book is "very fun and teaches you a lot about rain forest animals. You also get to make models of the animals you read about, and you can take them apart and build them again."
