Large print and a patronising tone. March 14, 2006
Writing for children does not require the author (in this case authors) to adopt a format which includes large print and a patronising tone. To do so is to underestimate the audience because younger readers are neither blind nor stupid. Put another way, there is no general age group of which I am aware that is suitable for this book.
The basic idea of this book is great and the photographs are mostly quite outstanding and the book retains one star for each of these attributes. The final product, however, is abysmal and reminded me of an old Monty Python sketch where the actors were impersonating adult presenters on a children's show about "How to do this" and "How to make that." Basically the message was this; "If you want to find a cure for all the world's diseases, then all you have to do is go to university, study to become a doctor and then find a cure for all the world's diseases." Simple really! Just like this book.
Might I suggest, the authors and publishers go back to the beginning, write the book as though it were for adults but without adding any undue technical details and explain everything from Claspers to a Feeding Frenzy all over again - in standard print. Then, but only then, might they be onto a winner.
