4 out of 5 stars good overview   May 17, 2006

All in all, the book is quite helpful for initial information in setting up, stocking, and maintaining a seawater aquarium. If you already have an aquarium up and running though, and are looking for detailed information about lighting, chemistry, that sort of thing, this book may be too elementary.
I especially enjoyed the part at the end of the book where Fenner describes groups of organisms and gives details on their ecology.
Lastly, having lots of color pictures is a plus to this book, as is the easy conversational style of writing.

4 out of 5 stars good book for beginners and for reference   March 23, 2006

this is a good book for those just starting off in the saltwater hobby or for those who are returning to the hobby after an absence. fenner's writing is clear and concise. the chapters are divided with the basics of tank husbandry first (set up designs, etc.) and later chapters devoted to giving information on the many species of fish that one will typically come across in this hobby. overall, if you're going to do a saltwater tank, buy this book first and read it cover to cover. you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Made for the Saltwater Newbie   March 22, 2006

I'm quite pleased with this book. I've had freshwater tanks for years and felt it was time to move on. This book is very thorough but not necessarily in a "technical" manner. His writing is interesting so you're not just trying to digest facts. Lots of pictures which helps to understand, I think. I'd recommend it to anyone trying to set-up or successfully maintain a saltwater tank.

5 out of 5 stars Overall, a great reference book   March 19, 2006
This book has it all -- details on filtration systems, inverts and fish specicies, and more. Fenner has injected the book with practical care tips for maintaining a successful marine aquarium.

I found this book very helpful as a beginner, it covers the set up very well including pretty much everyhing you can come across.
It has illustration with discription of marine species and points the ones with low surviving rate. Its a big colorful book that is easy to read. So far every question that I had, had an answer in this book.
