5 out of 5 stars Great reference   September 14, 2007

I received this book from my mother. A few years ago I was visited by a Sharp Shinned Hawk which landed on my front porch near dusk one evening. I was not sure what kind of hawk it was, so I looked in my newest bird identification book which listed all known hawks, but was not sure I had identified it appropriately until I looked in my oldest reference, "North American Wildlife", which had the exact picture and description. This is a great book for the wildlife enthusiast as it contains numerous forms of plant and animal information.

5 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Resource   November 28, 2006

I received this book from my Mom in 1984, and in the arrogance of youth, assumed it would be simplistic or inferior (it was from Reader's Digest- gasp!). However, she had done her homework- The guide was well-illustrated, informative, and balanced in its presentation. It provided basic information that taught you to ID flora and fauna, showed geographic ranges, wildlife tracks/prints, and other bits of info that piqued your interest enough to encourage more in-depth research with other sources. It's still the first book I grab when I encounter a new item- a fox-like creature in the headlights, a tree or a wildflower I've never seen before- Would be a great resource for kids or older folks, nature lovers or book lovers in general- It's well-done.
