This magazine is great for ages 8-12 and 7 and under should get Your Big Backyard. This was very informative with lots of neat animal facts. I loved the jokes and the pull out FUN PAGES. Out of the FUN PAGES i made a avtivitie book. That I do when I'm bored. The price itsn't too bad. Over all this is a great magazine for any animal lover between the ages of 8-12!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Ranger Rick, good for literacy building   July 28, 2005

I have a teenage daughter in special ed, and her teacher was telling me how hard it is to find appropriate materials for low literacy readers that didn't "talk down" to the readers. My daughter loves animals and nature and absolutely loves this magazine and attempts to read it cover to cover. She learns the words because she is motivated by the great pictures and stories. I'd recommend this for anyone, but I think it would be good for ESL (English as Second Language) and special ed classes.

5 out of 5 stars RANGER RICK IS GREAT FOR KIDS AND ADULTS TOO!   June 22, 2005

I recently subscribed to Ranger Rick for my son because I wanted him to have his own magazine subscription arrive in his name. I figured he would be more interested in reading something that came in the mail with his name on it and that it would incourage him to read more. I was right! He loves reading all the stories and looking at the pictures and playing the trivia games. We often spend our dinners talking about the stories and fun games in the magazine.

5 out of 5 stars Helped Foster My Love and Respect for Animals   April 30, 2004

(...)

Living in the country as I did, I saw plenty wild animals in my backyard (squirrels, raccoons, possums..), but armed with Ranger Rick, I was able to appreciate and see them up close with out being bit, scratched, mauled, or hauled off to the emergency room for rabies shots!

Besides the wonderful animal features, there were projects, games, and activities to keep me and my brother busy. The concepts put forth in each issue emphasized recycling, kindness to animals, and conservation -- values and beliefs I carry with me almost 30 years after the fact.

So whether you live on a farm, the suburbs, or the city, Ranger Rick would be a wonderful gift for your child. It will help foster a life long love and respect for animals, as well as reinforce key values (conservation, recycling, etc.). A few things have changed over the past 30 years, but Ranger Rick is still consistantly a good magazine.
