4 out of 5 stars Heads up bird lovers   April 10, 2007
3 out of 4 found this review helpful

For those of you that are bird lovers, or nature lovers in general, this is a touching true story that highlights the struggle between man and nature. The narrator is an eclectic character who befriends a flock of wild birds in the middle of a big city. He gets to know them individually and so does the viewer, sharing their lives on a personal basis. It is both heartwarming and sad, and leaves one wanting to know what happens after it ends.

5 out of 5 stars The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill   April 10, 2007

I loved it, I grew up in Los Angeles, and there were a flock of blue and yellow parrots that would come and eat the walnuts in our neighbor's tree. No one belived my mother when she said she saw them, until she set up her camera on a tripod and timer and caught them eating the walnuts.

5 out of 5 stars It's about more than just the birds.   April 10, 2007

Yes, the parrot footage is cute. Such intimate views of the birds would have been enough, but the much more fascinating focus of the film is the man who feeds these parrots. I'll admit, at first I thought the homeless man was a bit off his rocker (in fact, I think the movie invites you to think that). The climax of the movie is when you can get past that initial impression of his eccentricity, and see him for a sensitive, sincere, and intelligent human being. I highly recommend watching this.

5 out of 5 stars Colorful Parrots of San Francisco   April 10, 2007

This book is an absolute must for any bird lovers as well as people who are interested in San Francisco lore. Mark Bittner's story is a fascinating picture of his changing lifestyle as he becomes involved with the character of each member of the flock of conures. The photos are great, and lend much to the charm of the book. The happy ending is the icing on the cake!

5 out of 5 stars Lovely portrait of an odd, wonderful pocket of magic   March 28, 2007
This is a wonderful movie about the overlay between nature and civilization, which quietly suggests that there isn't really much division between the two... As seen through the eyes of a humble, Zen-oriented bird-lover, the growth of a colony of runaway parrots in the San Francisco hills reveals both sadness (in their having been stolen from their native jungles) and beauty (in their thriving, cacophanous existence) and the wisdom in accepting what nature has to offer, both magical and grim. The original theater release is augmented by extensive bonus materials that really flesh out the history of the flock, both before and after the original film was made. Utterly fascinating.
