"Shattered" is a well-acted, directed and written little "TV" film. March 28, 2008 24 out of 27 found this review helpful
Yes, I know it was actually released in the theaters, but it was not well-received and jumped to cable and rental venues in remarkable speed. I'm usually very cautious regarding films in which this happens, but I loved the three stars in this film so much that I just had to take a chance on this film and I'm glad I did.
I honestly can't reveal anything about the plot because, contrary to some reviewers on here, this is a solid mystery story that is a bit low-key and low-budget, hence, my "TV" film headline. The film is a lot of fun as Pierce Brosnan, previously known as James Bond, gives an outstanding performance as "the bad guy" in this film who takes great pride in torturing a couple that is well-played by Butler, The Phantom of the Opera and Bello, World Trade Center. I don't think his fans like him in such a role and that may be why this film suffered at the box-office just as his other excellently played bad guy role in The Matador which is definitely worth your viewing. Add in a low-budget feel to the film and I can see why some bulked at it, but it is so much better than most will expect if they give it a shot. Failure at the box-office does not mean the film is a failure or of no quality, just as great success at the box-office is no guarantee of a pleasurable experience either.
Well, I don't want to go on further and inadvertently give up any information that will lead people to figure out the mystery in this film, but it is very clever and you will be very perplexed until the end when you finally discover just why Brosnan's character is angry at this couple that he does the outlandish things that he does. It does stretch credibility at times, and the story is a bit contrived (like any mystery really is anyhow), but the performances and twists and turns of the plot should keep you glued to the screen.
Under the radar suspense! March 17, 2008 The cast alone should get you interested in this movie. I didn't see it brought out in theatres but saw a preview from renting another movie. I'm a fan of all three actors and thought the writing and acting was excellent. So many twists and turns in this movie, but in the end...they all make sense and you wonder why you never thought of it before. I really enjoyed this movie and thought Brosnan played an excellent role in being the "bad guy". But was he really the bad guy? You need to watch to find out! I recommend this movie!
An unexpected gem!!! March 17, 2008 I purchased this movie based on the cover (front and back), since I had never heard of it prior to seeing it in the store. Boy am I glad I took a chance. This was a wonderful story, with action, suspense and an unpredictable twist.
I highly recommend this movie.
Why Did They Change The Title? February 24, 2008 As a big Gerard Butler fan I had been waiting to see this film as for some reason it never got a UK theatrical release. It went out on on US TV TNT last year.
After watching the film I could not understand why the powers that be decided to change the title from Butterfly on a Wheel to Shattered. It should have been best left alone im my opinion as everything was very well explained in the film and in the director/writers commentary.
It is roughly the story of Neil and Abby Randall who seem to have it all. One day whilst Neil is on his way to drop off Abby before having a day at his bosses estate they are surprised by a stranger who has hid in their backseat(Pierce Brosnan). He says if they do not do what he wants they will never see their daughter Sophie again.
This sets off a chain of events to prove if both Neil and Abby will do whatever it takes to save their daughter. From emptying their bank accounts to Abby delivering a document that may ruin Neil's business reputation. At every corner you seem to ask yourself why is he doing this and when you think you have guessed the reason it goes off in another tangent and you are back to square one. It is definitely a film to keep you guessing.
I only knew the ending because I had read spoilers on various sites but if I hadn't I would never have seen the ending coming. I don't want to give the ending away for those who have not seen the film.
All 3 give great performances and it is great to see Pierce in a bad guy role as he is a very underestimated actor.
It is worth watching the film the 2nd time with the directors/writers commentary on as it is hysterical in places. They both have a very Brtish sarcastic sense of humour.
Better than Jumper! February 19, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
So many great technical reviews here that I will only say I also saw "Jumper" this week...and, in comparison, Shattered seemed quite good! :>) You start out hating Brosnan's character but end up, on account of the story twist, thinking maybe he's not all THAT awful. Gerard Butler's character evolution goes in just the opposite direction. Can't say much more without giving away the plot. You know all the way through that there's gotta be a revelation that flips the story on its ear; all must not be what it seems (otherwise, this film really would be awful). The twist does finally come and I was not disappointed.
