North & South is a splendid, four-hour adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's 19th century novel about an unlikely, and somewhat star-crossed, love between a middle-class young woman from England's cultivated south and an intemperate if misunderstood industrialist in a hardscrabble, northern city. Daniela Denby-Ashe plays Margaret Hale, forthright and strong-willed daughter of a former vicar (Tim Pigott-Smith) who relocates his family from a pastoral village outside London to unforgiving, largely illiterate Milton, a factory town where John Thornton (Richard Armitage) and his mother (Sinead Cusack), survivors of poverty, rule their cotton mill with an iron hand. Thornton befriends Margaret's father but incurs her wrath for his severity with his workers. What she doesn't notice is Thornton's core sense of responsibility for his employees' welfare. On the other hand, he misinterprets some of Margaret's own actions and intentions. Equally stubborn, the two drag out their obvious attraction over many painful months and events.

North & South's two leads are both very good, though Armitage's brooding, penetrating performance may very well be considered a classic one day. There are other wonders in the cast: Cusack and Pigott-Smith are superb, and Brendan Coyle is memorable as a firebrand union organizer who ultimately becomes an ally to a softening Thornton. The miniseries script by Sandy Welch is a persuasive mix of historical context and character study. Brian Percival's direction is full of moments that linger in the imagination, such as the winter-dream look of a busy cotton mill, with thousands of snowy fibers floating in the air. --Tom Keogh

Elizabeth Gaskell who wrote the book in the early 1800s that this movie was created from is an exciting find for fans of Charles Dickens and Jane Austin. She treats all of her characters with humor and compassion, and this movie is a moving adaptation of her work. Beautiful and historically accurate costuming. This movie is a new favorite.

[...]It totally sucked me in and I ended up watching the whole thing! Of course, since youtube isn't exactly the preferred way of viewing films, I had to get the DVD. I'm a total diehard Pride and Prejudice fan (the BBC version, obviously), and I must say that this is a serious rival for my affections. It's a little darker and more somber than P&P, but is equally well-done. The cinematography is beautiful, artistic and effective and really conveyed that period in time, while the score perfectly captures the mood of the piece. And of course, it goes without saying that all the acting is superb. They really chose the right people to play each and every character. Without knowing anything about this piece, I found the storyline to be completely compelling and engaging, with humor, tragedy and drama taking place in an uncertain and exciting time in British history. I'm not going to give any of the story away, so you'll just have to see for yourself! BBC does it again. Just wish they gave it more exposure-it's definitely worthy of it! Wonderful film.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic period drama   November 2, 2008

I loved Pride and Prejudice, with Matthew McFayden as Mr. Darcy, but Richard Armitage is outstanding as Thornton and I have to rate this movie over Pride and Prejudice. It was so realistic,I actually felt I was transported back in time. It is truely a classic love story,of two people who are both stubborn, but love each other and wont give in until it is almost too late. Margaret does not understand the ways of the north in manufacturing and Thornton does not understand the ways of the south, which is more of a carefree lifestyle and not so harsh. The acting was superb and the location was at a old cotton mill in England which made it very factual. I loved it and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys period drama stories. It is a masterpiece for all to see......

5 out of 5 stars North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell   October 30, 2008
It was far beyond my expectations. A movie of top quality. Of course a movie cannot compare to the actual book- but this comes as close as any possibly can.
Absolutely brilliant!
