The human body is an amazing machine with complicated systems for sensing, adapting, reproducing, regenerating, and thinking and this 1975 scientific exploration provides an in-depth look at how the various systems of the body work. This voyage through one typical day begins with an exploration of the body's largest organ, the skin, and its amazing regenerative powers and function as both protective armor and heat regulator. The journey continues with a look at all the senses and includes both a look at how those senses are utilized in a typical day and an internal view via computer generated models and actual inside-the-body footage obtained by special mini-cameras and camera pills of how the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth work. Next the film explores the heart, blood, muscles, bones, joints, reproductive system, and brain. A multitude of specialized doctors and research scientists present contemporary developments in stem cell research, cell reproduction, and understanding the brain and perform real-life medical procedures including the implantation of extracellular matrix (or ECM) tissue to aid in joint regeneration and an intricate brain surgery to remove a cancerous tumor while preserving the patient's ability to speak. The footage is graphic, intense, and fascinating. Especially enlightening is the discussion of aging in which the cell regeneration that happens constantly in the body is compared to a series of photocopies in which each generation of copies looses resolution and becomes increasingly imperfect. From its power plant to its copying, security, and reproductive systems, the human body is a complex machine that is only just beginning to be understood thanks to extensive research and scientific programs like this. --Tami Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Very fun to watch   September 22, 2008

This vid was very interesting to watch because it's national geographic, and national geographic is always good. But not incredibly detailed as far as important knowledge for college classes.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the classroom   September 16, 2008

I am a community college teacher and have used this in my classroom. I love the graphics. This movie is broken into pieces that enable you to show the section before lecture, usually only being 15 to 20 minutes. Overall my class liked this movie, good graphics, also the footage of inside the body is really well done. Not boring for college age students, would be good for high school students as well.

5 out of 5 stars homeschooling must!   April 10, 2008

I used this for homeschooling my 10 and 11 year old. It absolutely held their interest and was incredibly informative, although there were a couple of scenes during which they felt the need to cover their eyes. (Just graphic, not inappropriate) Reproduction was tastefully presented and there was no need to fast-forward! I believe I learned at least as much as they did although I have been an RN for 16 years- Very well done, entertaining, some humorous sections, some very touching. My five year old attempted to watch it, though, and was quickly running out of the room because it was too "disgusting".

5 out of 5 stars Great teaching tool   February 9, 2008

This DVD is a great teaching tool. I use it at the Community College for an Introduction to Anatomy & Physiology class. The students love it. They learn without realizing. I like that the format is divided into body systems. It would have helped me:(1)to know before purchase that the DVD is 100 min. (too long for 1 class) and (2) to have an insert in the DVD case that gives times for the various systems covered. My preview at home accomplished those 2 purposes.
