Product Description
The Black Panthers' Search For Justice.A gritty and soulful film Passin' It On is the story of a man in search of justice who is wronged by the nation with which he is at odds. Part indictment part redemption tale this film offers startling insight the Black Panther Party's role in a social revolution and the New York police department and the FBI's devious targeting of one of the organization s most fervent leaders-Dhoruba Bin Wahad (born Richard Moore).Emerging from the Bronx ghettoes and a life of petty crime Dhoruba dived head first into the Black Power movement serving breakfast to school children with one hand while wielding a gun with the other. Amid a national program of FBI-let oppression against the Panthers Dhoruba was framed on the flimsy evidence of the wounding and grotesque disfigurement of two police officers and sent to prison. After trials and mistrials incarceration and eventual acquittal 19 years later a still-impassioned Dhoruba his attorneys and other Panthers finally tell this incredible tale of race revolution and redemption."A visually compelling film that speaks of a movement not only a man" Pass It Onbristles with poetry and the exhilarating recollections of a true American political prisoner.System Requirements:Run Time: 102 minsFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: DOCUMENTARIES/MISC. 5 out of 5 stars A Lyrical Story of Prejudice and Persecution   December 7, 2007

This documentary is masterfully directed and edited including some remarkable historical footage of New York City from the 60's and 70's. While the story revolves around one persecuted individual, Dhoruba bin Wahad, formerly Richard Moore, and one group, The Black Panthers, the story of persecution and the struggle for truth and freedom is compelling and universal. I remember learning about the Black Panthers in Junior High Social Studies class in the mid-1970s. Until I saw this film, I had no idea their early mission had as much to do with feeding and mentoring children as it garnered self-esteem and unity to take a stand against racism and police excesses. The inclusion of FBI sponsored operations to contain the civil rights movement is breathtaking. This very powerful film presents a very different viewpoint from the story presented in my 1970s textbooks. It is distressing to see how Richard Moore was framed and sent to prison for nearly two decades for a crime he didn't commit. He is a compelling speaker. He tells of his persecution with poignancy all the while maintaining the powerful voice of a truthteller. The film never gets in the way of his very articulate voice. Rather, the film provides just the right amount of supporting materials to develop interest and understanding of the political and societal climate of that time. The editing is extremely sharp. The directing and production are exceptional. I highly recommend this film.

5 out of 5 stars Priceless   June 24, 2001

This documentary tells the story of Dhoruba bin Wahad, one of the lesser known but no less passionate political prisoners in the U.S.A. Following from his youth to politicization to incarceration and eventual freedom, Passin' It On is a tale of Dhoruba's triumph against all odds, and of those seeking to thwart him. While older, this film is extremely relevant to the issues at hand.
